Alabama TV By Matt Henry
Matt Henry is a Brighton-based photographer, whose work explores the power of fiction through the photographic medium. Inspired by the politics and culture of 1960s and 70s America, Henry's work is driven by an attention to style and characterisation, each photograph beautifully designed, composed, and executed. His latest project, 'Twin Palms' explores the lives of glamorous, monied housewives in suburban, mid-century California. Think Stepford Wives meets Thomas Pynchon: beautiful but destructive women, roaming listlessly around modernist villas, every image suffused with the eye-popping colours of a counter-cultural acid trip. 'Alabama TV' depicts a coiffed, blonde woman, dressed up in bubblegum pink blouse and denim micro-shorts as she sits in her pink boudoir, watching Clint Eastwood on TV. The colours are extraordinary, using the full spectrum of pink shades (from rose to raspberry, fuchsia to flamingo), to create an image that is both arrestingly beautiful and conceptually provocative: a jewel of contemporary photography.
