Life - 1 Butterfly Yellow By Roy's People
Urban artist Roy's People understands that it's the little things in life that count: his street-art-meets-photography aesthetic has captivated the contemporary art world with its fantastical use of uniquely hand-painted miniature figures. Roy's People has created a series of installation pieces which cleverly work the little figures into the classic square frame. The conventional print or canvas suddenly takes on a life of its own in these three dimensional, plastic snapshots, which look as though they might break into animation at any moment. 'Life - 1 Butterfly Yellow' is a masterpiece of composition. Roy's People uses an expanse of white as the background, giving real drama to the focal point: a large, yellow, taxidermy swallowtail, captured in mid flight at the top corner of the box. The bottom is edged with a thin strip of plastic grass, on which stand several small figures, one of which flies the butterfly as a kite. The piece is fun and fresh but it is also compelling to behold, with its clever use of depth perception and bold compositional technique.
