We Are Soldiers 3B By Roy's People
Urban artist Roy's People understands that it's the little things in life that count: his street-art-meets-photography aesthetic has captivated the contemporary art world with its fantastical use of uniquely hand-painted miniature figures. Roy's People has created a series of installation pieces which cleverly work the little figures into the classic square frame. The conventional print or canvas suddenly takes on a life of its own in these three dimensional, plastic snapshots, which look as though they might break into animation at any moment. 'We Are Soldiers 3B' - part of the 'We Are Soldiers' series - is backed by a hand stencilled, black silhouette of a British WWII soldier, head bowed in a moment of repose against a crisp white background. The edges of the soldier are soft, bleeding onto the white for a street art stencil effect and above him hovers a fighter-plane. At the bottom the box - dwarfed by the soldier's enormity - two miniature figures walk toward one another, caught static in a moment of movement. There is a certain sense of playful comedy to the composition, yet there is also something powerful about the image - an unlikely blend that Roy's People achieves so deftly - and the end result is compelling to behold.
