The work of RYCA has developed something of a reputation in the contemporary art world: the pop-meets-urban style has established RYCA as a leading figure in the evolving street scene and a name to watch. His work frequently incorporates familiar figures from contemporary culture, transplanting them into other pop-culture contexts to create an aesthetic of skewed nostalgia which is always playful, a little ironic and oh-so spirited. 'Acid Empire' features a small, resin figurine, which varies from item to item, but always takes the form of an Imperial body from the Star Wars galaxy. RYCA has hand applied yellow and black details: a large, acid smiley over the figure's face, and drips of pigment running down the body. Brilliantly satirical, this is a twenty-first century comment on consumerism, and the final piece - boxed with the cautions 'NOT A TOY' and 'AGES 18+' - is a triumph of contemporary art.
