Peeping Leia Portrait By Miriam Lobo

Contemporary print-artist Miriam Lobo has an eye for the iconic. All of her prints are hand-made by Lobo herself, who loves to explore with photography, bringing colour-blocking and high-saturation to bear on existing images. Inspired by the Abstract Expressionist and Pop Art greats of the 1950s and 60s - including Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol - Lobo's work has a distinctly retro flavour, updated with twenty-first century technologies of skilled image manipulation. Lobo's 'Peeping Leia' series are inspired by her childhood adoration of the iconic rebel princess: an especially poignant theme for 2017. 'Peeping Leia Portrait' depicts a black and white photograph of Princess Leia, glancing coyly to the side. The image is stark and minimalist: turning up the saturation, Lobo makes a feature of Leia's ever-exceptional hairstyle against her iconic, white suit. Over the top of the portrait, Lobo has layered two blocks of poppy colour - in shades of orange and pink - slightly off-kilter and over-lapping to create a third tone in the centre. Bright, bold, and edgy, Lobo's print is a powerful tribute to the well-loved star.
